Description of an Energy Audit
A home energy audit is the systematic review of the interior and exterior of your home to determine it's energy use and the potential for savings and efficiency. A BPI certified home energy auditor will thoroughly examine your residence (approx 3-4 hours) from the basement to the attic using sophisticated monitoring equipment. Detailed data will be collected, analyzed and presented to you in a comprehensive report outlining specific actions that will lead to lower energy bills.
Energy audit benefits:
Dramatically reduce your energy bills
Energy efficiency is the best investment
Efficiency measures typically payback in as little as 2-3 years
Federal and Penna. State incentives further reduce cost
Efficiency cleans the environment
A drafty home, rooms that are to hot or cold, and high energy bills are all common issues for homeowners. A quality installation of a new heating or cooling system, or adding more insulation may fix part of the problem, but the way to better results is through an integrated "whole-house" approach that looks at your most valuable investment as a system. We pride ourselves on diagnosing your home issues and fixing them right the first time!
The energy auditor will run through a series of questions regarding any known problems areas of your home. Be sure to highlight any future expansion plans you may have or specific goals you would like to achieve.
Examine the outside perimeter of the home, including building orientation and vegetation affecting shade and windbreak.
Examine all areas of potential air leakage, including doors, windows, skylights, roofing, chimneys, attic, siding, and heating/air conditioning units.
First Floor - Inspect thermostats, seals, glazing, weather stripping and locking mechanisms of window and doors.
Upper floors - Inspect attic for seals and insulation around hatches, lighting fixtures, ventilation ducts, fans and ceiling anomalies.
Basement - Inspect for age and fitness of all appliances, washer, dryer, (all connecting hoses) water heater, furnace, basement wall, and all ducts for sealing and insulation.
Blower Door Test
We will install a special door, fitted with a very powerful fan (blower) to suck air from the house, causing it to depressurize. Special monitors will track the amount of air that enters the home through cracks, seams, drafts and other holes in the building enclosure. The blower door will measure the quality of the indoor air and moisture or condensations problems.
Energy Audit Report
Your home energy auditor will compile a comprehensive report detailing the areas in your home that can be repaired, insulated and sealed to boost your energy efficiency. The report will also outline repair to your heating and cooling appliances or recommend replacements.
Repairing, Replacing, Relaxing
With your energy audit pros report in hand you can choose to do the recommended repairs yourself or hire a contractor to do the work. JC Heating will also be able to provide the follow-up service.
Once the repairs are done you will enjoy energy savings in the range of 10-50% depending on the condition of your home before the audit. You can feel satisfaction in saving the money, saving energy and saving the earth - all at the same time.
