New $600 Federal Tax Credit For B20 Compatible Furnaces, Boilers Available To Homeowners Beginning Jan. 1, 2023

The recently passed federal Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) includes a provision to incentivize the efficiency of heating oil equipment while increasing the amount of biodiesel blended into the fuel.

Under the IRA, homeowners are eligible for tax credits of $600 for installation of new oil/biofuel blend-compatible heating appliances. The credit is available to homeowners on an annual basis and capped at $600 per year.

Beginning January 1, 2023, heating oil dealers should make their customers aware of the new tax credit and explain how to apply for it.

In order to qualify for the $600 federal tax credit, the following conditions must be met:

— Equipment Placed in Service After December 31, 2022

Equipment must have 2021 Energy Star ratings (87 AFUE for oil boilers and 85 AFUE for furnaces) and be certified by the manufacturer to burn heating oil blended with a 20 percent biodiesel or renewable diesel fuel. This equipment is available now.

Many new heating oil boilers and furnaces currently available from manufacturers should be compatible with 20% biodiesel blends and qualify for the $600 credit on new installations beginning January 1, 2023.

Manufacturers are currently providing certification for B20 compatibility on new equipment.

Homeowners may apply for the credit on IRS Form 5695 and file it with their 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR return.

However, homeowners must wait for the IRS to issue an updated Form 5695 and guidance before filing for the credit.

The IRS expects to publish the updated Form 5695 and guidance sometime in January.

EMA will provide the form and guidance once they become available from the IRS.

Oil heat burns cleanly. Today's Oil Heat burns 95 percent cleaner than in 1970. Since it burns so cleanly, it comes well within the air pollution standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency. Low sulfur products and renewable biofuels, such as those made from soy beans, reduce Oilheat’s already near-zero emissions even further.

Winter Fuel

What To Know & How To Protect Your Fuel

Think You Don't Need An Anti-Gel - Think Again

Diesel - heating oil gelling is a phenomenon that occurs when the temperature drops and fuel thickens, becoming like gel. Factors that can contribute to fuel gelling include the presence of wax crystals in the fuel, presence of water (condensation) in the fuel, and low temperatures.

Common Mistakes

  • Not using an anti-gel in warmer winter weather. Sudden drops in temperature can leave you your fuel vulnerable.
  • Using an additive that doesn't remove water. Fuel oil is susceptible to water through storage, handling and through condensation forming in the tanks. In the winter, water in the fuel can begin freezing at 32 degree  and begin obstructing the fuel lines and filters.

Trust us to keep your fuel flowing when you need it the most, order your winter additive with every delivery.

Corrosion: Fatal Enemy of Old Oil Tanks

It is extremely important that owners of heating and oil storage tanks are aware of corrosion. Corrosion is exceedingly harmful to the life and functionality of a tank because of its damaging nature to the lining, inside and out. When sulphuric acid combines with any type of water, corrosion and rust will form. The tank material then begins to break down and become weak, jeopardizing its durability.

Any heating and oil storage stank should be checked regularly for rust and corrosion on the outside of the tank. Also, a tank specialist can come and check for corrosion on the inside of the tank as well. Roth Double-Wall Tanks come with rust-resistant protection that can ensure stability and life to the product. Give us a call today @215-945-4833 to see how you can prevent your tank from damage.

The system is quiet, we hardly know when it is running and we have an abundance of hot water.

We installed a System 2000 EK-1 oil boiler with 40 gallon hot water heater. We had an old hot water boiler that had been nursed along each year! They kept asking when we were going to replace that relic. Well it seemed to be working OK so we procrastinated for about 10 years. Finally this past fall our service man came to clean out our aging boiler and showed me the new System 2000 system and after his fine presentation we decided that we could actually save money by putting in this system.

RUSSIA STOKES FEARS ABOUT NATURAL WINTER GAS PRICES
September 21, 2022
Concerns about a ripple effect of natural gas prices this winter were triggered Monday after Russia said one of its main natural gas supply pipelines to Europe would be shut indefinitely. European gas prices immediately shot up 30% higher on the news. On Friday, prices were up after Russia said that a leak in Nord Stream 1 pipeline equipment would keep it shut beyond a three-day maintenance halt. Europe has accused Russia of weaponizing energy supplies in retaliation for Western sanctions imposed following the invasion of Ukraine. Russia claims the West has launched an economic war and sanctions have hampered pipeline operations. As noted two weeks ago, concerns over natural gas supplies in Europe present another huge challenge as demand for U.S. propane to replace natural gas in Europe would likely be a big factor for U.S. retail propane marketers

Inflation Reduction Act Recognizes Low-Carbon Liquid Heating Fuels For GHG Reductions
Congress and President Biden have recognized the critical role that the transition to low-carbon biofuels in homes heated with fuel oil will play in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). The recently passed Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), includes legislation that incentivizes the heating oil industry to improve the efficiency of its equipment while increasing the amount of biodiesel blended into the fuel. Both are essential in reaching the goal of reducing GHG emissions to zero. The IRA encourages the liquid heating fuels industry to continue to move forward with its transformation to a clean and green heating source. This bill’s enactment was largely due to the efforts of Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY), representing the State that uses the most heating oil.
The IRA provides for homeowner tax credits of $600 for each new oil/biofuel blend compatible heating appliance. Congress has set two major steps/goals to qualify:
  • For equipment placed in service after Dec. 31, 2022, the equipment must meet 2021 Energy Star efficiencies and be suitable for a 20% blend of biodiesel or renewable diesel use.
  • For equipment placed in service after Dec. 31, 2026, the equipment must have an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) of at least 90% and be suitable for a 50% blend of biodiesel or renewable diesel use.

Is it time to replace your water heater.

Is your gas fired water heater is making strange noises. As your water heater gets older, it will start to make noises when the water heats inside. The noises you hear may be due to the build-up of sediment on the bottom of the tank, which causes your water heater to be less efficient than it should be and accelerates heat damage that can lead to leaks and tank failure.

HARVEY THREATENS NATURAL GAS SUPPLY

 American Energy Coalition -  August 29th, 2017

“Natural gas prices gained on Monday as damage from Tropical Storm Harvey is seen halting production and pipeline operations,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Futures settled up 3.4 cents, or 1.2%, to $2.925 a million British thermal units on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

When natural gas production is threatened or halted by a major storm, the supply chain is interrupted and prices rise. When oil production is threatened, homeowners can rest assured that the fuel already sitting in their storage tanks is secure. Additionally, the Department of Energy maintains a one million barrel supply in the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve, in case of extreme emergency.

U.S. OIL PRODUCTION KEEPING OIL PRICES LOW

Strong U.S. oil production is helping to keep prices low, according to a recent article by United Press International.

UPI reports that oil prices are under $50 per barrel, which is well below the $100 per barrel seen in 2014. “Producers in the United States are partially responsible for the current oversupply in oil,” the article states. “Global supply increased by 260,000 barrels per day in February, to 96.52 million barrels per day, and U.S. production is the highest it has been in a year, at 9.1 million barrels per day, roughly the amount Saudi Arabia produced in February.”

Jan 26, 2017

President Trump this week signed a pair of executive orders that will pave the way for construction of both the Keystone XL and Dakota Access crude oil pipelines.

Together the pipelines will bring 830,000 barrels of cheap crude oil per day from Canada and the Bakken shale formation to U.S. refineries. The Dakota Access pipeline will carry 570,000 barrels per day along its route from North Dakota to distribution points in Illinois.

We have long supported both pipelines projects as a way to increase plentiful supplies of domestic crude oil which in turn will keep the cost of heating oil and other fuels down.

The Days Of Cheap Natural Gas Are Over

A recent article on Forbes.com states that natural gas prices are poised to increase 40 to 60 percent.

"Natural gas prices averaged a little more that $2.50 per million Btu in 2016. Those days are over" the articles states. "Prices will average $3.55 to $4.00 in 2017. Prices have more than doubled since March 2016.

"Supply is tight because demand and exports have grown, and shale gas production has declined."

Q: Please help me sort fantasy with reality with regard to oil-eat bacteria I have heard about. Can they clean up leaky oil-storage- tank messes in the soil?

A: Leaking underground heating oil storage tank problems can indeed be eliminated naturally through bioremediation.

Naturally occurring microbes are released  onto a contaminated area and consume the hydrocarbons, converting them into carbon dioxide, water, trace carbon, bacterial cells and fatty acids. Microbes are found everywhere, and are the basic recyclers of organic materials. The average human body carries 3 pounds of microbes in the body. The trick is choosing the correct microbes to get the job done.

Microbes are typically kept in an inert carrier until ready for useage. In order to work they need what all organism need: water, food hydrocarbons (oil), an acceptable temperature (32 to 140). Once activated with water, the microbes go to work, the time necessary being dependent upon the concentration of the mess. After chowing down, the microbes will die, return to natural concentrations levels, or be eaten by other organisms. The bioremediation calendar can be long, from 120 days to a year.

The Importance of Air Duct and Vent Cleaning

Cleaning

Duct cleaning is one of those tasks that it's easy to forget about. Since ducts and vents are often overlooked, many homeowners might not even remember the last time they had them attended to. The fact is, however, that duct and vent cleaning may have health advantages, and might even reduce your energy bills and extend the life of your forced air system.

Vent and Duct Cleaning and Indoor Air Quality
One thing to consider when you're thinking about vent and duct cleaning is the fact that indoor air quality is decreasing. This is due in part to the popularity of high-efficiency windows, doors, and increased insulation that reduce the amount of air transfer between inside and outside. Though these fixtures are great when it comes to reducing energy costs and making a room more comfortable, they are often not supplemented with any additional ventilation, causing pollutants that enter the home to remain inside instead of leaking out through drafty windows and gaps.

The verdict still isn't in on whether or not duct and vent cleaning is going to improve indoor air quality in every situation. Though there is literature out there to support either side of the debate, we do know that in certain cases, duct cleaning is likely to find and remove harmful molds, fungus, and/or microbes from an infected system. At the very least, duct and vent cleaning is not going to do your home any harm, and there is a chance that it will actually increase the quality of your indoor air.

How Duct and Vent Cleaning Works
There are two ways of duct and vent cleaning. One system is connected into the ducting to provide suction. A high-pressure air hose is passed through the ducting to remove the particles from the interior. The other system uses a large specialized vacuum attached to a hose and a brushing system that is run through the ducting. Both systems are effective when operated by properly trained personnel.

A proper cleaning should include the following: cleaning of all registers, inside the ducting, and the interior of the heating and ventilating system.

The furnace fan must be cleaned, and if you have air conditioning or a heat pump, the coils inside the system must also be thoroughly cleaned. Finally, a disinfectant can be fogged through the cleaned system to eliminate any mold, bacteria, and dust mites that might remain.

Proper cleaning of a home should take a minimum of three to five hours, depending on the size of the house. If the home has more than one heating and cooling system, or the system is located on the roof, it can take longer and cost more.

If a low price is offered, a consumer needs to make sure that the price includes a thorough cleaning, including registers, the inside of the ductwork, and all the fans and coils. Charging extra for cleaning fans and coils is unreasonable because those steps are mandatory for having a properly cleaned system.

Indoor Air Quality

Keep Pollution Out Of Your Home. Indoor Air Quality

Make healthy air in your home your goal. How? First, keep pollution out. Here are some easy, but important tips for healthy indoor air.

Keep Sources of Pollution Out of Your Home

    • Declare your home a smokefree zone. Never let anyone smoke indoors. Ask smokers to go outside.
    • Test your home for radon, an invisible gas that causes lung cancer. Every home should be tested since radon may be found in any home. If your home has high radon, it can be fixed.
    • Keep humidity levels under 50 percent. Use a dehumidifier or air conditioner, as needed. Clean equipment regularly so they don't become a source of pollution themselves.
    • Fix all leaks and drips in the home. Standing water and high humidity encourage the growth of mold and other pollutants.
    • Put away food, cover trash and use baits to control pests, like cockroaches.
    • Avoid burning wood because it adds pollution indoors and out. Don't use outdoor wood boilers, also called hydronic heaters, to heat your home's water. They add unhealthy soot to the air in your neighborhood.
    • Don't use scented candles or fragrances to hide odors. Figure out what is causing the odor, then clean that up and ventilate to add fresh air.
    • Use cleaning, household and hobby products that are less toxic. Don't store hazardous chemicals in your home.

SPRING AND SUMMER ENERGY-SAVING TIPS

Simple and inexpensive actions can help you save energy and money during the warm spring and summer months. | Photo courtesy of iStockphoto.com/eyedias.

Simple and inexpensive actions can help you save energy and money during the warm spring and summer months.

Here you'll find strategies to help you save energy during the spring and summer when the weather is warm and you are trying to keep your home cool. Some of the tips below are free and can be used on a daily basis to increase your savings; others are simple and inexpensive actions you can take to ensure maximum savings through the spring and summer. For more ways to stay cool while saving energy, check out our Energy Saver 101 infographic, covering everything you need to know about home cooling.

If you haven't already, conduct an energy audit to find out where you can save the most.

Also check out tips to save energy during the fall and winter.

USE YOUR WINDOWS TO GAIN COOL AIR AND KEEP OUT HEAT

  • If you live in a climate where it cools off at night, turn off your cooling system and open your windows while sleeping. When you wake in the morning, shut the windows and blinds to capture the cool air.
  • Install window coverings to prevent heat gain through your windows.

OPERATE YOUR THERMOSTAT EFFICIENTLY

  • Set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible in the summer. The smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill will be.
  • Keep your house warmer than normal when you are away, and lower the thermostat setting to 78°F (26°C) only when you are at home and need cooling. A programmable thermostat can make it easy to set back your temperature.Avoid setting your thermostat at a colder setting than normal when you turn on your air conditioner. It will not cool your home any faster and could result in excessive cooling and unnecessary expense.

USE FANS AND VENTILATION STRATEGIES TO COOL YOUR HOME

Photo of a ceiling fan in motion.

  • If you use air conditioning, a ceiling fan will allow you to raise the thermostat setting about 4°F with no reduction in comfort.Turn off ceiling fans when you leave the room. Remember that fans cool people, not rooms, by creating a wind chill effect.
  • When you shower or take a bath, use the bathroom fan to remove the heat and humidity from your home. Your laundry room might also benefit from spot ventilation. Make sure bathroom and kitchen fans are vented to the outside (not just to the attic).

KEEP YOUR COOLING SYSTEM RUNNING EFFICIENTLY

Photo of an HVAC professional performing maintenance on an outdoor air conditioning unit.

  • Schedule regular maintenance for your cooling equipment.
  • Avoid placing lamps or TV sets near your room air-conditioning thermostat. The thermostat senses heat from these appliances, which can cause the air conditioner to run longer than necessary.
  • Vacuum registers regularly to remove any dust buildup. Ensure that furniture and other objects are not blocking the airflow through your registers.

Importance of Maintenance on Your Air Conditioning System

There are few things sweeter than coming out of the heat into your comfortably air conditioned home. Unfortunately, air conditioning isn’t something we often think about – that is, until it breaks down on a 100-degree day.

You may not realize it, but your A/C unit loses around 5% of its efficiency for each year that it runs. Over time, components weaken and break down, and without routine maintenance, you could end up paying some major repair bills or having to replace the unit altogether.

Fortunately, you can keep your A/C running at full capacity by simply scheduling a regular tune-up. Giving your A/C a little TLC once or twice a year is important and can save you a lot of money and headaches in the long run.

Save on your electric bill

You’re probably keenly aware of how high your power bills can get during the heat of summer. The A/C is a huge power hog, and it will pull more and more power for each year that it goes without maintenance. Even if you have an energy-efficient A/C, those years of neglect add up and you’ll end up paying for it when your power bill comes in each month. The good news is, proper care and maintenance can keep that unit running at up to 95% of its original efficiency.

Save on repairs

The fact is, it costs a whole lot more to fix something than it does to maintain it. Sooner or later, neglect will catch up with you – and it’s when temperatures are high that your A/C is most likely to break down. Regular maintenance significantly decreases the chances of your A/C breaking down unexpectedly.

A good will check out coils, check for leaks, check Freon levels, and check filters as needed. All those little things might seem negligible, but a small leak or dirty filter can end up doing serious damage to your perfect climate control – and your wallet – if the problem is allowed to escalate. A small investment now can save you some serious cash down the line.

Save your warranty

You may have gotten a great warranty with your A/C unit, but did you know that your factory warranty may be void if you neglect maintenance. Many manufacturers require annual maintenance for the warranty to be honored. Your A/C may still be technically under warranty, but if you’ve neglected maintenance, you might just end up having to pay for needed repairs out of pocket.

Save your sanity

If you want to stay cool this summer, an air conditioning tune-up is a good idea. It’ll ensure that you and your family stay comfortable without any unpleasant breakdowns.

10 Tips for saving energy & money this winter

1. Take advantage of heat from the sun.  Open curtain on south-facing windows.

2. Adjust the temperature. When you are home and awake, set your thermostat as low as is comfortable. When you are asleep or out out of the house, turn the thermostat back 10 degrees.

3. Find and seal leaks. Look for air leaks around utility and plumbing pipes, Look for gaps around chimneys, recessed lighting and unfinished spaces.

4. Install tight-fitting, insulating drapes or shades on windows that feel draft after winterizing.

5. Add caulking and weather stripping around leaky doors and windows.

6. Schedule service for your heating system with JC Heating.

7. Replace your furnace air filter once a month.

8. Keep your fireplace damper closed unless a fire is burning. An open damper is like an open window, warm air goes right up the chimney.

9. Keep the heat in. Check the seal on your fireplace damper and make it as snug as possible

10. If you never use your fireplace, plug and seal the chimney flue.
