Whether you’re selling or buying a home, it’s likely that at some point you’ll have questions about heating oil tanks.

If the home is currently using natural gas or electricity for its heating, confirming any buried tanks have been properly decommissioned or removed is an important step in any home purchase. There are several clues that may indicate there is or has been a tank on the property.

Not sure if there is an abandoned underground storage tank is buried on your property?

We can assist you in finding if there is or was an underground oil tank on you property.

IS THERE A PROBLEM IF I HAVE AN ABANDONED TANK ON MY PROPERTY?

Discovering an abandoned tank on your property doesn't mean that it has leaked or caused an environmental problem. Even a leaking abandoned tank does not necessary pose a health risk because most leaks are usually small and localized. Although most abandoned underground oil storage tanks do not cause major environmental problems or health risks, ignoring an abandoned oil tank is not recommended. Even if it has not yet caused a problem, it could in the future.

Tank Sweep - An oil tank sweep is a great way to find buried oil tanks using a  magnetic locator. We are able to located a metallic object up to a depth of sixteen (16) feet.

Here are some visual clues and tips that may indicate that there is or was an underground oil tank on the property.

We will inspect the inside of the house for evidence of an old oil heating system. Items like an oil fired heater, copper oil lines exiting the foundation and foundation walls, or patch marks on the foundation wall where such lines may have been removed.

On the outside of the house look for an old vent pipe that is usually fastened vertically along side of the house. The vent pipes are usually 3/4 to 2 inch steel piping and in many cases has a cap that looks like a mushroom on the top of the piping. As for the fuel tank fill pipe, it is protruding from the ground and the fill pipe will have a special cap that in some cases may be difficult to remove. A fill pipe will be needed to accurately measure your heating oil tank.

In some more challenging cases, JC Heating will use a magnetic detector device that can be used in an attempt to locate an abandoned underground heating oil tank.

Soil Testing

Soil sampling is the process of taking soil from around an underground storage tank.  Sampling can be completed while a tank is still in service or samples can be taken and analyzed before or as part of a decommissioning process.
